THE TRYST

After a light lunch of sandwiches and salads at a tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant, they checked in right at 1 p. m. They were well-dressed, and carried a suitcase, to look respectable. They had made the reservation by phone, and now registered as "Mr. and Mrs." This was a rather elegant downtown hotel, not an edge-of-town cheap motel. No hourly rates here. He'd had to pay for the full night, but they both expected it to be worth it.

In the elevator, they talked about ordering coffee and a fancy dessert, or maybe a glass of wine. Inside the room, with "do not disturb" on the door handle, their thoughts began to change. Sitting on the edge of the king-sized bed, their lips met for a moment. It didn't even qualify as a kiss, really; just an almost accidental touching. That "touch" proved to be the catalyst that set in motion an hour of almost cosmic forces. They forgot about dessert.

Later, they lay in bed, talked a bit, and explored a little of the terrain they had recently visited. Eventually, they arose, and danced together, slowly and sensuously. There wasn't a lot of room, but they found that pressing really close together, and now and then moving a bit, worked just fine.

Eventually, they leisurely dressed, stopping now and then, to reexamine previously-visited territory, and reminding themselves of recent feelings. Finally, they straightened the room, took their suitcase, and (as casually as possible) exited the hotel.

He drove a few miles to a quiet residential neighborhood, and parked in front of a well-kept family residence. They sat and talked for some time, holding hands and doing a lot of smiling.

A school bus stopped half a block away, and disgorged a group of animated high schoolers. Two teens - a girl and a boy - walked in their direction. The four of them joined forces, and entered the house together.

Later, they talked about how their days had gone, and shared (part of) what they had been doing. Somehow, no dinner had been cooked, so they ordered a big pizza.
